Riding Shotgun

I’m listening to “Shotgun” by The Band of Heathens.

The refrain is “Riding Shotgun through . . .”

I immediately thought of Africa and my son-in-the-Lord, Joseph Anyovi.

It’s amazing how many passengers can be packed into an African Matatu (Taxi Bus) or my Toyota Landcruiser going to a Northern Uganda refugee camp.

i told Pastor Joseph, “You ride shotgun with me upfront.

Joseph had a blank stare. “Ride shotgun, Mzee.”

it took several minutes to explain about stagecoaches, John Wayne, gold-laden lockboxes, the Wild West, and shotgun riders.

If I recall correctly, I drew a stick drawing in the dirt.

It was one more reminder, “ It just don’t translate.

More to come on that.

I promise.
